We are
raising sport cattle for Team Ropers and Bulldoggers who want fast light
cattle with a good horn base that will remain fresh for a long time. In order to remain in
our program the cattle must demonstrate that they will produce
lighter framed offspring with the ability to perform well in the arena.
Cattle that don't meet that criteria are taken to auction
yard. Breeding stock that is placed for sale through the ranch must be of the same
quality that we would use in our herd.
With proper care we
feel that our cattle should last several seasons before they are unsuitable for
use in the arena. Our customers have found that with proper feeding and
rest periods that they can easily get a couple of seasons from our Corriente.
- Cows
-
Our cow herd was purchased from Joe Floyd, former
president of the PNCA (Pacific Northwest Correinte Association), in the
spring of 2000 and contains 47 cows of various ages. We will be
selling some of the bred cows in the fall of 2003 to make room for our
replacement heifers.
- Heifers
-
Our yearling heifers are used primarily for roping
and not bred until their second year. During their first year they are
evaluated for horn growth, conformation and athletic ability any that don't
make the grade are disposed of. Two year old heifers are kept at the
ranch, roped a little, and bred to our bulls. In the fall they will be
selected as a replacement heifer or sold to a Corriente
breeder.
- Bulls
-
We currently have two older
bulls and one 3 year old bull. The older bulls are proven herd sires
that were purchased along with our cow herd. The 3 year old bull was
purchased at the 2001 PNCA show after placing 1st in his class. He has
all the attributes we're looking for and should prove to be an excellent
sire.
- Steers
-
Steers should have a moderate athletic frame with
good horn base and shape. Our steers are usually ready to rope by the
time they are 12 to 16 months old.
